ABOUT

Fighting Back Against Parkinson's Disease

Rock Steady Boxing Miami is an affiliate of Rock Steady Boxing, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2006, by former Marion County, Indianapolis, Indiana prosecutor, Scott C. Newman, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at the age of 40.  Rock Steady Boxing gives people with Parkinson's disease hope by improving their quality of life through a non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness curriculum.  Rock Steady Boxing's mission is to empower people to "fight back" against Parkinson's disease.  As an affiliate it is our goal to carry on with this mission and bring the benefits to our community.

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative movement disorder which can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function. The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates there are more than 1 million people in the United States diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and more than 60,000 people are diagnosed each year. Rock Steady Boxing is the first gym in the country dedicated to the fight against Parkinson’s.

Rock Steady Boxing Miami operates out of Thump Fight Gym and Tropical Park Boxing Gym.  Classes are run by Steve Arintok and his assistant coaches.  Steve is an experienced fitness trainer with a boxing background and well as a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.   In August of 2015, Steve traveled to Indianapolis to attend "training camp" and become a Certified Rock Steady Boxing Coach.

Our workouts, some which are adaptations from boxing drills,  work on mobility, strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, flexibility and neuro-adaptation.  Our fighters are inspired to achieve maximum effort through a "tough love" approach.  In addition, a very important component of the program is the camaraderie and the spirit that is developed.  We encourage caretakers and family members to participate.  Rock Steady Boxing classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson's, can actually lessen their symptoms and lead a healthier life.
